Social Security May 2025: Some recipients will receive three checks

Stimulus payments worth up to $1400 are going out in these 4 states

Some Social Security recipients are getting three checks this May—and the timing isn’t a mistake.

Due to the way Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments are scheduled, eligible recipients will receive two SSI deposits in May, in addition to their regular Social Security retirement benefit.

Why some recipients get three payments in May

The Social Security Administration (SSA) manages both Social Security retirement benefits and Supplemental Security Income. While the two programs are separate, some people qualify for both.

SSI is a need-based program for seniors, blind individuals, and people with disabilities who have limited income and resources. In May 2025, the SSI schedule results in two payments:

  • May 1: Regular monthly SSI payment
  • May 30: Advance payment for June (because June 1 falls on a weekend)

That means anyone who receives both Social Security retirement and SSI will see three payments hit their accounts in May.

May 2025 Social Security and SSI payment dates

Here’s when checks will be sent:

SSI recipients:

  • Thursday, May 1
  • Friday, May 30 (June payment paid early)

Social Security recipients (based on birthday):

  • Wednesday, May 14: Birthdays on the 1st–10th
  • Wednesday, May 21: Birthdays on the 11th–20th
  • Wednesday, May 28: Birthdays on the 21st–31st

Larger payments for 3.2 million retirees

Many public sector retirees will also see larger Social Security checks in May. Thanks to updates from the Social Security Fairness Act, workers affected by the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset—such as former police officers, firefighters, and teachers—began receiving corrected benefits in April.

Roughly 3.2 million retirees now qualify for higher monthly checks, which will continue with their May payments and beyond.

What to do if your check is missing

If you didn’t receive a payment as expected, the SSA recommends:

  1. Contact your bank to confirm there’s no delay.
  2. If not resolved, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or visit your local Social Security office.

You can also estimate your monthly benefits using the Social Security calculator.

Bottom line: May brings an extra SSI check for millions of recipients, and larger benefit payments for many retired public employees. If you’re eligible for both programs, watch for three deposits this month.
