Some Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries will see two deposits in May 2025, thanks to quirks in the Social Security Administration (SSA) calendar.
Why are there two payments in May 2025?
In May, SSI recipients will receive their regular May payment on May 1 and an early payment for June benefits on May 30. This happens because June 1 falls on a weekend, requiring the SSA to issue the payment one business day earlier.
Approximately 7.4 million Americans receive SSI each month. About one-third of them also qualify for regular Social Security benefits, meaning some people could see three separate payments during May.
Who will receive two or three checks?
- SSI recipients: Those receiving only SSI will see two payments—one on May 1 and another on May 30.
- SSI plus Social Security recipients: Individuals who qualify for both programs could receive three deposits, depending on their birthdate and benefit type.
Social Security payments for retirement or disability benefits will still follow the regular Wednesday schedule:
- May 14: For those born between the 1st and 10th.
- May 21: For those born between the 11th and 20th.
- May 28: For those born after the 20th.
Beneficiaries who started receiving payments before May 1997 will get their Social Security check on May 3, with their SSI check arriving separately on May 1.
Upcoming months with double SSI payments
This calendar quirk happens multiple times in 2025. According to the SSA:
- May 1 and May 30 (June benefit paid early)
- August 1 and August 29 (September benefit paid early)
- October 1 and October 31 (November benefit paid early)
No SSI payments will be made during the months following these early deposits (June, September, and November).
