Trump signs executive order targeting sanctuary cities and boosting law enforcement

New order aims to cut federal funding for sanctuary jurisdictions

President Donald Trump signed a sweeping executive order Monday designed to crack down on sanctuary cities, strengthen local law enforcement, and enforce federal immigration laws more aggressively.

The order directs the Attorney General and Secretary of Homeland Security to identify and notify sanctuary jurisdictions of their noncompliance, warning that they may lose access to federal funding if they fail to correct their policies. It also calls for the development of eligibility verification systems to prevent illegal aliens from receiving federal benefits.

President Trump said the measure fulfills a core campaign promise to prioritize public safety. “No more Sanctuary Cities! They protect the criminals, not the victims,” Trump said. “They are disgracing our country.”

Law enforcement support and accountability measures outlined

Beyond immigration enforcement, the executive order provides extensive new support for state and local law enforcement. Key provisions include:

  • Legal resources and indemnification for officers unfairly targeted during official duties.
  • Expanded training, increased pay, and improved legal protections for law enforcement.
  • Enhanced sentences for crimes committed against police officers.
  • Greater investment in prison security and crime data systems.

The order also instructs federal agencies to maximize the transfer of excess military and national security equipment to local police departments.

Focus on ending equity policies and holding officials accountable

The executive order criticizes race- and sex-based “equity” initiatives that it claims undermine law enforcement effectiveness. It authorizes the Attorney General to pursue legal action against state and local officials who obstruct public safety efforts or discriminate under the guise of diversity initiatives.

It further authorizes Homeland Security Task Forces to coordinate the new law enforcement and immigration enforcement initiatives.

Trump administration doubles down on immigration and public safety

The executive action reflects Trump’s broader agenda to restore what he describes as “law and order” in American cities while reversing sanctuary city policies he claims have endangered public safety. The White House emphasized that failure to comply with immigration enforcement will now carry serious financial and legal consequences.

The order takes effect immediately and will be implemented consistent with existing law and subject to available funding.
