The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) dedicated its new Powwows: Celebrating Native American Culture Forever stamps during a ceremony at the Gathering of Nations, the largest powwow event in the country.

Honoring Native American tradition through art

Held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the dedication ceremony drew more than 100,000 attendees. The new stamps feature original paintings by Mateo Romero, a Southern Keres Cochiti Pueblo artist. Romero captured Native dancers in motion, using thick, colorful brushstrokes to convey the spirit and vitality of powwow celebrations.

“The Postal Service takes great pride in our stamps and the unique opportunity they offer to tell the story of America,” said Steven W. Monteith, USPS chief customer and marketing officer. “We hope they inspire a deeper appreciation of Native American culture.”

A vibrant celebration of dance and heritage

The Powwows stamp pane includes four designs:

  • A young woman performing the Crow Hop in a teal dress.
  • A Women’s Traditional dancer in brown and white regalia.
  • A Women’s Fancy Shawl dancer wearing a fringed cape resembling a bird’s wing.
  • A Men’s Hoop dancer balancing multiple hoops mid-performance.

Each stamp includes the word “POWWOWS,” the name of the dance, “USA,” and “FOREVER.” The pane’s header reads Powwows: Celebrating Native American Culture and features a traditional powwow drum illustration.

Stamps available nationwide

The Powwows stamps are issued as Forever stamps and are now available at Post Office locations nationwide, online at usps.com/shopstamps, by phone, or by mail. A video about the stamp release will be posted on USPS’s Facebook and X pages.
