The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is urging tax-exempt organizations to prepare for the May 15 filing deadline. Organizations operating on a calendar year basis must submit required forms by that date to maintain their tax-exempt status.

Key forms to file for 2023

Tax-exempt groups must file the following forms for the 2023 calendar year:

  • Form 990 series (including Forms 990, 990-EZ, and 990-PF)
  • Form 990-N (Electronic Notice, or e-Postcard)
  • Form 990-T (Exempt Organization Business Income Tax Return)
  • Form 4720 (Return of Certain Excise Taxes)

All returns must be filed electronically through an IRS-authorized e-file provider.

Filing tips to avoid errors

The IRS advises organizations to carefully review their forms for missing or incomplete schedules, which can lead to rejected filings. Organizations eligible to file Form 990-N must also submit electronically through IRS.gov.

An extension of up to six months can be requested by filing Form 8868, but payment deadlines are not extended.

IRS offers online compliance workshops

To assist organizations, the IRS offers free online workshops covering filing requirements, maintaining tax-exempt status, and understanding the responsibilities of exempt entities.
