As roadwork season begins, New York State DOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez emphasized the urgent need for driver caution to protect highway workers. Speaking during National Work Zone Awareness Week, she cited alarming statistics: 322 work zone intrusions last year caused two deaths and 138 injuries.
To combat this, the state is expanding initiatives like “Operation Hard Hat” and the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement Program, which have successfully reduced accidents in monitored zones. Dominguez stressed these efforts are about safety, not revenue, and every fine supports worker protection programs.
She urged all drivers to stay alert and respect road crews, highlighting that each New Yorker has a role in preventing tragedies on the highways.
