SSI and Stimulus Checks: Can You Get Both in 2025?

If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you may still qualify for federal stimulus money—even if you didn’t file taxes. In 2025, many Americans are unaware that these benefits can overlap.

Here’s what you need to know about SSI and stimulus eligibility and how to claim missed payments.

Are SSI Recipients Eligible for Stimulus Checks?

Yes. SSI recipients were eligible for all three rounds of Economic Impact Payments (EIPs) issued between 2020 and 2021. That includes:

  • $1,200 from the first round
  • $600 from the second round
  • $1,400 from the third round

These payments were not counted as income or resources for SSI and did not impact benefit eligibility.

What If You Missed a Payment?

If you didn’t receive one or more stimulus checks, you may still be able to claim them in 2025. The IRS advises SSI recipients who missed a payment to:

  1. File a 2021 tax return, even if you have no taxable income
  2. Claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for any missing amounts
  3. Use the IRS Free File tool if your income is under $79,000

The deadline to claim 2021 stimulus funds is April 15, 2025.

Do You Need to File a Return?

Not always. Many SSI recipients received payments automatically based on data shared between the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the IRS.

However, if you changed addresses, bank accounts, or didn’t receive the full amount due to dependent status or filing errors, you likely need to file to claim the difference.

Can You Receive Other Aid Too?

Yes. You can receive stimulus payments in addition to:

  • SSI
  • Social Security retirement or disability (SSDI)
  • SNAP (food stamps)
  • Medicaid or housing assistance

Stimulus funds are not counted against income or asset limits for federal programs for 12 months from the date of receipt.

What About 2025 Stimulus Checks?

As of now, no new stimulus checks have been approved for 2025. However, unclaimed payments from prior years are still available if you act before deadlines.

Bottom Line

If you’re on SSI and didn’t get all your stimulus money, you may still qualify. File your 2021 return by April 15, 2025, to receive payments you’re entitled to.

For official help and free filing options, visit irs.gov or the SSA’s stimulus portal.
