Thousands of families across the U.S. will receive Section 8 housing assistance this week. These monthly payments help low-income renters cover housing costs, but timing varies by location.
Here’s what to know about the April 2025 schedule and how tenants and landlords can confirm payment timing.
When do Section 8 housing payments arrive?
Most Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher payments go out between the 20th and 25th of each month. Local Public Housing Agencies (PHAs) process these payments and transfer the funds directly to landlords.
While many PHAs use direct deposit, some still issue paper checks depending on the location and landlord preferences.
Who receives payments and how?
Section 8 payments support two groups:
- Landlords receive the HUD-funded subsidy from the PHA.
- Tenants pay their share of rent directly to landlords, based on their income.
Together, these payments cover the full monthly rent. Tenants usually handle their portion at the start of the month, while PHAs disburse the subsidy mid-to-late month.
How to check your Section 8 payment status
Tenants and landlords can confirm payment status by:
- Logging into their local housing authority portal.
- Contacting the assigned caseworker or agency representative.
Make sure your paperwork is current. Missed deadlines for income re-certification or incomplete documentation often lead to payment issues.
What to do if you haven’t received your April payment
If a payment hasn’t arrived yet, take these steps:
- Verify your payment status using your PHA’s portal.
- Confirm that your direct deposit information is correct.
- Call your caseworker to check if your file is complete and up to date.
In most cases, local agencies process payments on time. However, weekends or agency staffing issues may cause short delays.

As housing demand rises and HUD updates income limits for 2025, eligibility for vouchers and other forms of assistance may shift. If you haven’t yet applied, some counties still have open waitlists this month.
