Sen. Chris Van Hollen met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia in El Salvador after days of denied access, according to Fox News. Garcia, deported from Maryland and held in a maximum-security prison, was previously ordered returned by U.S. courts, citing due process violations.
El Salvador allowed the meeting but refused Garcia’s release, despite a federal court rejecting the DOJ’s effort to block his return. President Nayib Bukele mocked the situation online, sharing photos of Garcia looking relaxed with the senator.
Garcia remains in custody, even as his wife’s domestic violence allegations and alleged MS-13 ties raise controversy. U.S. officials remain split over whether his deportation was a mistake or justified.
