More than half of Puerto Rico has regained electricity following a massive blackout that began Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. The outage affected 1.4 million people and cut water service for 400,000 residents, disrupting hospitals, the airport, and hotels.
LUMA Energy, the island’s power provider, blamed a failed protection system and vegetation on a key transmission line for the shutdown. While recovery continues, only 57% of customers had power back by Thursday evening, and the full restoration could take days.
The blackout highlights Puerto Rico’s ongoing grid instability, with officials and residents voicing outrage over unreliable service and high costs.
