Cornell University has joined a federal lawsuit opposing the Department of Energy’s abrupt decision to slash indirect cost reimbursements on research grants, claiming the move threatens vital scientific work.
The DOE announced it would abandon negotiated cost rates and impose a flat 15% cap, warning it may cancel grants for noncompliance. Cornell and other top research universities argue this violates federal regulations and will disrupt critical projects. A previous attempt to enforce a similar policy was blocked by a district court.
Cornell says the cuts would severely impact operations tied to energy research, including lab safety and high-tech infrastructure, jeopardizing both progress and student training.
