The New York Mets (10-5) broke through late and picked up an 8-0 win over the Athletics (6-10) on Sunday afternoon, clinching the series in the rubber match.
After stranding early baserunners, the Mets finally capitalized in the sixth inning. Luis Torrens delivered the first run with an RBI single off former Met Luis Severino, who had pitched five strong innings before being lifted. Torrens had a standout day, going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, a walk, and a run scored.
Kodai Senga turned in his best performance of the season. Despite some early traffic on the bases, the right-hander worked around trouble thanks to key double plays in the second and third innings. He settled in and retired the final six batters he faced, finishing with seven scoreless innings, four strikeouts, and just four hits allowed on 79 pitches.
The Mets’ offense erupted late, scoring two in the seventh, one in the eighth, and four more in the ninth. Brett Baty, Mark Vientos, and Torrens all contributed extra-base hits in the final frame. Every Mets starter recorded at least one hit, except Juan Soto, who walked twice.
A.J. Minter and Max Kranick each pitched a scoreless inning in relief to complete the shutout.
New York continues its road trip Monday night in Minnesota, with Clay Holmes set to face Joe Ryan. The first pitch is slated for 7:40 p.m.
