Livingston County proclaims April as Fair Housing Month

Livingston County has officially declared April as Fair Housing Month, highlighting its ongoing commitment to protecting residents from housing discrimination and promoting equal access to safe and affordable housing.

The proclamation coincides with the 57th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, signed into law on April 11, 1968, by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The landmark legislation prohibits discrimination in housing based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, familial status, or disability.

“We’re committed to ensuring that all residents have the right to fair housing, to live where they choose, and to own a home without fear of discrimination,” said Department of Social Services Commissioner Tracy McCaughey. “We continue to work to ensure everyone in our community understands their rights and has access to the same housing opportunities, no matter their background.”

The County’s Department of Social Services promotes equity through programs like the Housing Choice Voucher Program, which helps low-income households secure safe, quality housing in the private market by providing rental assistance. It also offers online tools to assist residents who may face discriminatory practices, including complaint support and step-by-step housing rights guides.

Livingston County’s commitment extends through its Housing Task Force, a collaborative group of community partners, service providers, and local leaders focused on expanding access to housing. The group works to ensure long-term sustainability and improved well-being for residents across income levels.
