A controversial executive order issued by Gov. Kathy Hochul during New York’s correction officer strike is partially expiring Wednesday, according to Spectrum News. The order, signed March 10, restricted local governments from hiring former state correction officers who quit or were fired during the unauthorized walkout.
While Hochul will let local hiring bans expire, she insists those individuals will still be barred from future state employment. The directive triggered backlash from counties, with Cortland and Chemung filing lawsuits calling it an overreach.
A judge recently blocked enforcement in Oneida County after finding the order could hinder local agencies from filling critical public safety roles. Meanwhile, Rensselaer County openly defied the order by hiring several of the separated officers.
