Gallahan urges New Yorkers to register as organ donors during Donate Life Month

Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan joined state lawmakers, advocates, and students in Albany on Tuesday to celebrate Donate Life Month and raise awareness about the life-saving importance of organ, eye, and tissue donation in New York.

Speaking at a press conference on April 8, Gallahan (R,C–Manchester) emphasized the urgent need to expand the state’s donor registry, as nearly 8,000 New Yorkers currently remain on the national transplant waitlist.

“Every 10 minutes, another person is added to the national transplant waiting list,” Gallahan said. “In order to help find suitable donor matches for every New Yorker who is still on the waitlist, we must do everything in our power to increase the donor pool.”

The event highlighted student winners of the 2025 Donate Life Month Student Art Contest. Their artwork, which promotes the message of organ donation, was on display during the press conference.

Gallahan encouraged all residents to register with Donate Life New York State. According to the organization, one donor can save eight lives and heal up to 75 others through eye and tissue donation.

Assemblyman Gallahan represents the 131st Assembly District, which includes parts of Ontario, Seneca, Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Broome, and Chenango counties.
