Authorities investigating apparent murder-suicide in Canandaigua

  • Staff Report

Ontario County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a tragic case involving the deaths of an elderly couple found inside their home on Wyffels Road in the Town of Canandaigua.

The victims have been identified as 82-year-old Priscilla Herbik and 81-year-old Christian Herbik. Deputies discovered their bodies on April 3 after a package delivery driver reported that items left outside the residence the previous week had not been retrieved.

Responding officers found the house locked and the couple’s vehicles still on the property. After forcing entry through a door, deputies found the couple deceased inside the home. Both appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds to their upper bodies, and a shotgun was located near Mr. Herbik. Authorities reported no signs of a struggle in the home.

The Monroe County Medical Examiner ruled Priscilla Herbik’s death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound. Christian Herbik’s death was ruled a suicide, also resulting from a gunshot wound.

While the investigation remains open, officials have emphasized that the incident appears to be isolated and limited to the residence. The sheriff’s office stated that there is no indication the situation posed a wider threat to the community.

Sheriff David J. Cirencione expressed condolences on behalf of the department, stating that the thoughts of law enforcement personnel remain with the family as they cope with the loss.
