A public celebration on April 13 at Ithaca’s First Presbyterian Church will spotlight the city’s immigrant community, according to organizers. The free event is hosted by Open Doors English, a nonprofit providing accessible English classes to newcomers regardless of income.
Guests will enjoy snacks, a documentary screening, and conversations with students and staff. Open Doors English welcomed over 260 learners this year from 48 countries, offering vital support to refugees and asylum-seekers. Local officials, including Mayor Robert Cantelmo and Assembly Member Anna Kelles, continue to back the group and reaffirm Ithaca’s sanctuary city status.
City leaders say they won’t cooperate with federal immigration crackdowns, pledging to prioritize community safety and inclusion.
