The Metropolitan Police said Brand has been charged with one count of rape, one count of oral rape, one count of indecent assault, and two counts of sexual assault. These incidents allegedly occurred between 1999 and 2005.

Police detailed the allegations as follows:

  • In 1999, Brand allegedly raped a woman in Bournemouth.
  • In 2001, he allegedly indecently assaulted a woman in Westminster.
  • In 2004, he allegedly orally raped and sexually assaulted a third woman in Westminster.
  • Between 2004 and 2005, he allegedly sexually assaulted a fourth woman, also in Westminster.

Court appearance set for May

Brand is scheduled to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 2. Officials believe he is currently in the United States. If he does not return voluntarily, prosecutors may seek extradition.

Investigation sparked by media reports

The investigation began in September 2023, following reporting by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4’s Dispatches. The media outlets documented accounts from several women who described rape, sexual assault, and abuse by Brand.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said a dedicated team of investigators continues to support the women involved. He urged anyone with information to contact police or the charity Rape Crisis, which offers 24/7 support.

Crown Prosecution Service approves charges

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorized the charges after reviewing evidence collected during the investigation.

“We concluded that Russell Brand should be charged with rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault,” said Jaswant Narwal, Chief Crown Prosecutor. “These are non-recent offenses involving four women.”

The CPS reminded the public that criminal proceedings are active and emphasized Brand’s right to a fair trial. Authorities urged people not to post commentary or content online that could affect the case.

Brand denies wrongdoing

Brand, 49, has denied all allegations. In previous statements, he described the claims as “very, very hurtful” and said all his past relationships were consensual.

He rose to fame as a stand-up comedian and became a household name through radio and TV. He later starred in Hollywood films and has since built a large following online as a political and cultural commentator.
