As April marks Distracted Driving Awareness Month, law enforcement across New York—including in Schuyler County—is intensifying efforts to curb crashes caused by phone use behind the wheel. Sheriff Kevin Rumsey says social media scrolling is a top offender in 2025.
Deputies are on the lookout for signs like drivers veering off course or visibly using electronic devices. To stay safe, Rumsey urges drivers to silence and stow phones or rely on hands-free features now standard in most vehicles.
Statewide patrols will increase from April 7 to 14 as part of the campaign to reduce preventable accidents caused by inattention.
