Mets outlast Marlins in 11 innings

The New York Mets capped off their season-opening road trip with a 6-5 victory over the Miami Marlins in 11 innings on Wednesday night at LoanDepot Park.

New York (3-3) wasted no time getting on the board, as Juan Soto’s first-inning single set up Pete Alonso’s RBI double to right-center. However, the Marlins (4-3) capitalized on Clay Holmes’ command struggles in the third, loading the bases with no outs and managing to push two runs across. Holmes, making his second start of the season, lasted 4.2 innings, allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out six.

Miami extended its lead to 4-1 in the seventh, aided by defensive miscues and a balk from A.J. Minter. But just when it seemed the Mets were out of gas, Alonso delivered again. His three-run homer in the eighth tied the game and forced extra innings.

After a scoreless 10th, Jesse Winker’s bases-loaded walk in the 11th gave New York the lead, followed by a fielding error that allowed Alonso to score an insurance run. Jose Butto and Huascar Brazobán combined for crucial outs to secure the victory.
