Ithaca man arrested after armed robbery at downtown restaurant

An Ithaca man is facing multiple charges after allegedly using a knife to steal food from a restaurant on East State Street and injuring a bystander during a confrontation outside.

The incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. on April 2. Officers from the Ithaca Police Department responded to reports of a man with a knife at a business in the 400 block of East State Street. According to police, the suspect used the weapon to take food and was later involved in a physical altercation in the parking lot with a civilian who sustained minor injuries.


The suspect was identified as 44-year-old Ira Bingham of Ithaca. Officers took him into custody near the scene.

Bingham was charged with first-degree robbery, a Class B felony; third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class D felony; and second-degree menacing, a Class A misdemeanor. He was arraigned in Ithaca City Court by Judge Peacock and remanded to the Tompkins County Jail on $50,000 bail.
