Emma Ward reached a major milestone as Syracuse edged No. 11 Virginia 13-12 on Saturday, marking the Orange’s fourth consecutive win. The victory extended the Orange’s winning streak to four games, improving their record to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in ACC play.
Syracuse led by four heading into the final quarter, but Virginia stormed back to tie the game at 12-12 with 6:30 remaining. With just over three minutes left, freshman Caroline Trinkaus capitalized on a free-position opportunity, firing a shot inside the far post to put the Orange ahead.
Virginia had one last chance, winning the ensuing draw and setting up a potential game-tying possession. Fiona Allen’s shot hit the post with under two minutes remaining, leading to a scramble that Syracuse sophomore Carlie Desimone secured. The Cavaliers regained possession with 35 seconds left and called a timeout with 17 seconds to play, but the Orange defense held strong to secure the win.
Ward, now seventh on Syracuse’s all-time scoring list, finished with a goal and three assists. Freshman Mileena Cotter tallied a team-high three goals, while goalkeeper Danny Guyette recorded eight saves.
Syracuse now hits the road for three straight games, beginning April 2 against No. 12 Yale.
