A large apartment fire on Chestnut Street in Ithaca Thursday evening drew widespread attention as thick smoke billowed across the city, according to fire officials.
Crews responded around 5:12 p.m. and quickly escalated the response, calling in off-duty firefighters and mutual aid. The blaze was brought under control in about 25 minutes, though crews stayed for hours to extinguish hotspots.
No injuries were reported, but one apartment was completely destroyed. Adjacent units were spared and remain livable. The fire’s cause is still under investigation.
