Urges Senate to Reject Bisignano Nomination
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) strongly criticized the Trump administration’s handling of the Social Security Administration and possible Social Security cuts warning that recent policy changes threaten the nation’s most vital social program.

He accused former President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk of orchestrating a “hostile takeover” of the SSA, which has led to service disruptions, mass layoffs, and benefit reductions. Additionally, he urged senators to reject the nomination of Frank Bisignano, warning that his leadership would accelerate Social Security’s decline.
Schumer: Social Security Cuts An Attack
“What is happening at the Social Security Administration is an utter travesty, and Senate Republicans are doing nothing, absolutely nothing at all to stop it,” Schumer declared during a Senate floor speech. “Donald Trump and Elon Musk—two billionaires, one of them the richest man on earth—are taking a chainsaw to Social Security.”
He outlined alarming changes within the SSA, including:
- Severe staffing cuts that have resulted in thousands of layoffs.
- Closure of field offices, limiting access to in-person services.
- Extended phone wait times, forcing some seniors to wait up to five hours.
- Burdensome new regulations, making it harder to access benefits.
Schumer: Bisignano’s Nomination Will Worsen the Crisis
Schumer urged lawmakers to reject Frank Bisignano’s nomination as SSA Administrator, citing his history of downsizing organizations.
“The agency is standing on a knife’s edge, and now Republicans want to appoint someone famous for shrinking the organizations he has led,” Schumer warned. “A yes vote on Bisignano is a vote to cut Social Security, plain and simple.”
Republican Silence and Growing Backlash
In addition to criticizing Trump and Musk, Schumer called out Senate Republicans for enabling the dismantling of Social Security. He posed several critical questions to them:
- Do Senate Republicans agree with Trump and Musk’s claims that Social Security is a “scam”?
- Do they support new SSA policies that create barriers for seniors trying to access their benefits?
- Will they take action to restore services and staffing?
“If Republicans continue to do nothing, the political backlash will be unprecedented,” Schumer cautioned.
What’s Next?
The Senate Finance Committee is set to hold a hearing on Bisignano’s nomination, marking a pivotal moment for the future of the SSA. Advocates warn that unless drastic action is taken, Social Security services could suffer irreversible damage.
