Protesters brave harsh weather in Geneva to rally against federal cuts

Despite freezing winds, rain, and snow, around 200 people gathered at Lakefront Community Park in Geneva on Saturday to protest the actions of the current presidential administration and its Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, led by billionaire Elon Musk. The demonstrators voiced their support for institutions they believe uphold the ideals of a democratic republic while opposing federal cuts to healthcare, veterans services, and education.

While many in attendance identified as Democrats, others made it clear they were unaffiliated with any political party, and some described themselves as “Reagan Republicans.”

Geneva resident and veteran Chuck Hippert denounced the cuts to veterans services, calling them “shameful.” He urged the crowd to recognize their activism as patriotic, comparing their demonstration to the early actions of America’s founding fathers.

Other speakers included State Senator Rachel May, who represents the 48th district, and Scott Comegys, chair of the Wayne County Democratic Committee. Both officials thanked the crowd for their engagement and commitment to preserving community-supporting institutions.

Following the speeches, protesters lined the southern side of routes 5 and 20, holding signs and chanting, “Elon Musk has got to go!” and “This is what democracy looks like!”
