Mayor Walter Bennett insists he never proposed dissolving the Waterloo Police Department, despite a public outcry from the officers’ union.
According to Bennett who spoke with The Finger Lakes Times on Friday, he merely asked Seneca County’s sheriff what it might cost for the county to take over village policing, calling it a routine exploration of potential savings.
Bennett said there’s no active proposal and emphasized the village would maintain 24/7 police coverage.
He framed the inquiry as part of broader efforts to find cost-saving solutions across municipal services without raising taxes.
