Momentum is building again for a sweeping New York bill aimed at slashing plastic packaging by 30% over the next 12 years, according to supporters rallying at the Capitol this week.
The Plastic Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act targets companies earning over $1 million, requiring them to cut plastic use, phase out harmful chemicals like PFAS, and pay fees to local governments. Advocates say it’s time to focus less on recycling and more on reducing waste at the source.
Business groups, however, argue a competing bill offers more flexibility and industry input. Critics of that version say it hands too much power to state agencies, potentially weakening the policy’s impact.
