Traffic stop in Port Byron results in firearm arrest and drug seizure

A routine traffic stop in Cayuga County on Tuesday night led to the arrest of a Wolcott man after state troopers discovered a loaded firearm and concentrated cannabis in the vehicle.

New York State Police say the incident occurred around 8:54 p.m. on April 8 when troopers from SP Auburn pulled over a 2000 Buick on State Route 31 in the town of Mentz. The vehicle was stopped for having a suspended registration due to a lack of valid insurance.

The driver, 21-year-old Cayla L. Blaisdell of Wolcott, was unable to provide proof of insurance. During the investigation, troopers found that the passenger, identified as 36-year-old Robert T. Wickman, was in possession of a firearm inside the vehicle.

A search revealed a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun loaded with a magazine containing seven live rounds. Troopers also seized approximately 122 grams of concentrated cannabis.

Wickman was arrested and taken to SP Auburn for processing. He faces charges of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a Class C felony, and Unlawful Possession of Cannabis, a violation. He was transported to the Cayuga County CAP for arraignment.
