For the first time since 1985 and just the second time in program history, Honeoye is headed to the state semifinals. The Bulldogs secured their spot with a 64-60 victory over Westfield in the Class C quarterfinals Saturday night at Rush-Henrietta High School.
Locked at 16 after the opening quarter, Honeoye (24-1) inched ahead to take a two-point lead at the half. The Bulldogs built their advantage to 10 in the closing seconds of the third quarter before entering the final frame up six. Westfield (21-3) mounted a late push, outscoring Honeoye in the fourth, but the Bulldogs weathered the surge and held on in the closing moments with free throws to punch their ticket to the next round.
Sophomore standout Landon Washburn led all scorers with a dominant 28-point performance, pouring in 13 in the first quarter and adding 15 more in the second half. Braiden Schneider and Dylan Washburn provided key contributions with 15 and 10 points, respectively, while Owen Cuba chipped in seven and Owen Reynolds added four to round out the scoring.
Westfield’s Carson Swanson closed out his high school career with 23 points, cementing his legacy as Western New York’s second all-time leading scorer with 2,448 points.
Honeoye now turns its focus to the Class C semifinals, where it will face either undefeated Cooperstown (24-0) or Moravia (19-1) on Friday, March 21, at 3:15 p.m. in Binghamton.
