Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo is set to announce his candidacy for New York City mayor, sparking urgent efforts by Democratic leaders to derail his comeback. Despite his resignation in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations, Cuomo remains a strong contender with high name recognition and a formidable fundraising network.
City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams and former Bloomberg aide Ed Skyler are among those exploring runs to challenge him. An anti-Cuomo super PAC has also launched, but previous attack ads have failed to dent his polling lead. Critics cite his controversial COVID policies and aggressive leadership style, while supporters highlight his crisis management record.
With the Democratic field still unsettled, Cuomo’s dominance isn’t guaranteed. His entry sets the stage for a volatile primary in a race where rank-choice voting could shape the outcome.
