Port Byron man held on $20K bail after strangling, beating victim: Felony charges filed

A Port Byron man was arrested on multiple charges, including two felonies, after deputies responded to a domestic incident in the early morning hours of February 26.

According to Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck, deputies were dispatched at 3:16 a.m. to the area of Dill Road and Redmond Road in the Town of Ledyard for a report of unknown trouble. Upon arrival, deputies found a victim who had been strangled and beaten. The individual was transported to Auburn Community Hospital by Southern Cayuga Ambulance and treated for injuries.


The suspect, 41-year-old Matthew G. Palmer, was located in the victim’s vehicle at the scene and taken into custody. Following an investigation, Palmer was charged with criminal obstruction of breathing/blood circulation and criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, both misdemeanors. He was also charged with first-degree criminal contempt, an E felony, and aggravated criminal contempt, a D felony.

Palmer was arraigned at Centralized Arraignment Court and is being held at the Cayuga County Jail on $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond.
