The National Weather Service has continued a flood warning for Cayuga County as an ice jam on Great Gully Brook continues to cause rising waters and road flooding. The warning, issued yesterday, will remain in effect until 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Local officials reported that the ice jam, which extends from the walking bridge to the mouth of the lake, has worsened, leading to ongoing flooding along Great Gully Creek. Efforts to mitigate the flooding are underway.
Areas most affected include Great Gully Cove Road and Fire Lane 8, where water levels have already begun impacting roadways. Officials urge residents to avoid flooded areas and use caution, especially at night when hazards are more difficult to detect.
The National Weather Service reminds drivers: “Turn around, don’t drown.” Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles, and officials advise residents to report flooding to local emergency services when safe to do so.
