Ithaca has upheld its sanctuary city policies, reaffirming its stance against federal immigration enforcement despite threats from the U.S. Department of Justice. Attorney General Pam Bondi warned that sanctuary cities could face prosecution and lose federal funding under President Trump’s second-term policies.
The city council renewed its 1985 resolution on Feb. 5, ensuring local law enforcement does not assist federal immigration efforts. Mayor Robert Cantelmo emphasized that Ithaca will not alter its policies in response to recent deportations.
Maintaining sanctuary status may cost Ithaca $11,000 in Justice Department funding, primarily used for police equipment. City officials remain committed to protecting undocumented immigrants and other vulnerable groups.
