Sixth officer arraigned for Marcy inmate’s murder

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

A sixth correction officer, Nicholas Kieffer, has been arraigned on murder and manslaughter charges for the fatal beating of inmate Robert Brooks at Marcy Correctional Facility. Kieffer, one of ten defendants indicted, turned himself in Monday after a scheduling delay.

Footage from officers’ body cameras allegedly captured at least five officers choking, kicking, and punching the handcuffed inmate. An autopsy confirmed Brooks’ death was caused by neck compression and blunt force trauma.

Several officers face murder and manslaughter charges, while others are accused of evidence tampering. Three workers remain under investigation, and some are negotiating plea deals. Advocates continue to push for prison reform in response to the case.
