NYSP serving court orders to striking CO’s: Some could be arrested if they don’t return

New York State Police have begun serving court orders to striking correction officers, warning that they could face arrest if they don’t return to work. Thousands of officers have been picketing outside prisons statewide for a week, defying New York’s Taylor Law, which bans public employee strikes.

Governor Kathy Hochul’s administration has responded forcefully, cutting pay, threatening job terminations, and calling in the National Guard to fill staffing gaps. Prison conditions have deteriorated, with reports of violence, medical neglect, and unsanitary conditions. Mediation talks between the state and the union are set to begin.

Hochul has also temporarily lifted restrictions on solitary confinement, a move aimed at restoring order. Despite these efforts, many officers remain on strike, arguing that they are overworked, understaffed, and underpaid.
