NY prison strike enters second week as mediation begins

Formal mediation has begun between state corrections officials and union representatives as correction officers continue striking across New York. Workers from 38 of 42 facilities are demanding better pay, improved conditions, and shift limits.

The state is penalizing strikers by docking their pay and terminating state-sponsored health insurance. The union, NYSCOPBA, has not sanctioned the strike due to New York’s Taylor Law, which prohibits public employees from striking.

Officers are also pushing for changes to the HALT Act, which limits solitary confinement. Advocates expect this to be a major discussion point in negotiations. Mediation started Monday at 11 a.m.
