Gov. Kathy Hochul announced she will not remove Mayor Eric Adams from office “at this time” but is pushing for new oversight laws to limit his power. Her decision follows allegations of corruption against Adams and resignations from four deputy mayors.
Hochul’s proposed measures include appointing a special inspector general for NYC, expanding financial oversight, and allowing city officials to sue the federal government independently. The legislation, requiring City Council approval, could pass with a veto-proof majority. Adams, who denies wrongdoing, expressed willingness to work with Hochul.
The Justice Department recently dropped charges against Adams, sparking backlash and resignations within the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s office. Hochul emphasized restoring public trust, stating Adams must “earn” confidence in his leadership.
