The Canisteo Police Department introduced its newest officer, Smitty, a K9 trained in narcotics detection, tracking, and personal protection. Announced on Feb. 18, Smitty replaces the department’s former K9, Dex.
Named in honor of fallen soldier Zachary D. Smith of Hornell, Smitty was trained by UPSTATE K9. His addition was made possible through strong community support from local businesses and organizations.
The department expressed gratitude to donors who helped fund the program, emphasizing the importance of community backing in maintaining a successful K9 unit.
