The NTSB revealed that the U.S. Army Black Hawk crew likely had faulty altitude data before colliding with an American Airlines jet over the Potomac River. Investigators found the pilots had conflicting altitude readings, and a radio miscommunication may have prevented them from hearing air traffic control instructions.
The crash, which killed all 67 onboard both aircraft, occurred during a routine training flight using night vision goggles. Transportation officials have temporarily restricted helicopter traffic near Reagan National Airport as the investigation continues.
Despite the tragedy, officials emphasized that U.S. air travel remains safe. The NTSB is still determining whether permanent airspace changes are necessary.
