The Buffalo Bills have reportedly found their next special teams coordinator, bringing in Chris Tabor to take over the unit, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Tabor spent the last two years leading Carolina’s special teams before serving as the Panthers’ interim head coach for the final seven weeks of 2023. Before his time in Carolina, he held special teams coordinator roles with Cleveland (2011-2017) and Chicago (2018-2021).
He takes over a Bills special teams unit that struggled last season under Matthew Smiley, ranking near the bottom of the league in key categories. Buffalo finished 28th in kickoff return yards allowed (30.8), 26th in kickoff return yardage (25.9), and tied for 24th in net punting average (40.9). Kicker Tyler Bass also had an inconsistent season, ranking 26th in field goal percentage (82.9%) and last in extra point percentage (92%).
While head coach Sean McDermott initially signaled Smiley’s return for 2025, the team ultimately decided to part ways with him after eight seasons in Buffalo, including the last three as coordinator.
