New York bans DeepSeek AI over surveillance risks

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Governor Kathy Hochul announced a statewide ban on the DeepSeek AI app for government devices and networks due to concerns over foreign surveillance and censorship. DeepSeek, owned by a Chinese firm, is suspected of data harvesting and potential cyber threats, prompting the prohibition to protect state infrastructure and privacy.

State cyber and technology officials praised the move, citing its alignment with Hochul’s 2024 AI use policy, which promotes responsible AI deployment while safeguarding New Yorkers’ data and security.

This initiative builds on prior actions, including a 2020 ban on TikTok for state devices, as part of New York’s broader strategy to combat cyber threats and ensure digital safety.
