TSA officers at Syracuse Hancock International Airport confiscated a loaded 9mm handgun on Friday, Feb. 7. The weapon, found in a carry-on bag, contained 17 bullets, including one in the chamber, and belonged to a traveler from Somerset, New Jersey.
The man was detained but later released to rebook his flight. He faces a federal civil penalty for bringing the firearm to a security checkpoint.
The TSA reiterated that firearms must be unloaded, locked in a hard-sided case, and declared at check-in to be transported in checked luggage.
