Syracuse women’s basketball (9-13, 3-8 ACC) secured a milestone victory Thursday night, defeating Virginia Tech (15-8, 6-6 ACC) 93-87 on the road. The win marked the 800th in program history and snapped a four-game losing streak against the Hokies.
Sophie Burrows led the charge with a career-high 28 points, hitting eight three-pointers, one shy of the program record. She scored 17 in the first half, helping Syracuse build a 49-37 lead at the break. Four other Orange players reached double figures, including Kyra Wood (18), Georgia Woolley (14), Dominique Camp (12), and Izabel Varejao (10). Camp also dished out 10 assists for a double-double as Syracuse recorded 24 assists, the most by any opponent at Cassell Coliseum since 2001.
Virginia Tech battled back in the third quarter, trimming the lead to three. The Hokies tied the game with 6:53 left, but key baskets from Wood and Burrows put Syracuse back in front for good. The Orange held off VT’s late push to claim their third ACC win of the season.
Syracuse returns home Sunday to face Wake Forest at 2 p.m. at the JMA Wireless Dome.
