THURSDAY HS BASKETBALL REPORT: Lyons boys hold off Geneva; Clyde-Savannah, Williamson/Marion girls earn narrow wins

Weather-related postponements shortened Thursday night’s Wayne-Finger Lakes high school basketball schedule, but the games that did take place delivered plenty of excitement.

The most thrilling game unfolded in Wayne County, where the Lyons boys secured a three-point home win over Geneva despite nearly blowing an 11-point fourth-quarter lead. It wasn’t the only close finish, as the Clyde-Savannah and Williamson/Marion girls each earned five-point league victories.

BOYS BASKETBALL (2/6)

Geneva (10-5) 54
Lyons (11-5) 57

Lyons held a slim 14-13 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 29-23 by halftime. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Lions were ahead 47-39 and looked to be in control when they stretched their lead to 11 with just over five minutes remaining, the largest margin of the game. The Panthers refused to go away, clawing back to within one at 52-51 with 1:40 left. Moments later, Geneva had a chance to take the lead, but Andrew Green’s go-ahead layup attempt rimmed out with 1:23 remaining. On the ensuing possession, Lyons’ Jah’Zyree Smith drained a clutch three-pointer to push the lead back to four, only for the Panthers to answer with a three of their own, making it 55-54 with 25.1 seconds to play. Smith then netted two free throws to extend the Lions lead to three. After a timeout, Geneva had one final shot to force overtime, but Green’s contested, off-balance three-pointer missed the mark. Lyons secured the rebound as the buzzer sounded, sealing its fourth consecutive win.
