Over 150 trucks lined up at Lakeside Quality Building Products in the town of Ontario Wednesday to secure rock salt amid a statewide shortage. The surge in demand, driven by prolonged cold weather, has forced suppliers like Lakeside to limit orders to 5 tons per truck.
American Rock Salt, the largest U.S. supplier, confirmed historic demand but prioritized local governments over contractors. Victor Village Mayor Gary Hadden told 13WHAM-TV he had concerns over dwindling supplies as municipalities struggle to keep roads safe during winter storms.
Governor Kathy Hochul’s administration assured residents that highway salt supplies remain sufficient under state contracts and is working with suppliers to address shortfalls.
