Geneva police close investigation into noose found at Lakefront

  • Staff Report

The Geneva Police Department has announced the closure of an investigation into a noose discovered last fall near the Long Pier walking trail, pending further evidence. The case, which began on November 15, 2024, drew community concern after officers responded to a report of a rope fashioned into a noose hanging from a tree.

Police conducted an extensive inquiry to trace the origin of the rope and identify any individuals responsible. Investigators gathered evidence from the scene, reviewed potential security footage, and attempted to locate witnesses. Despite these efforts, no witnesses or camera footage provided leads, and DNA analysis on the rope yielded no results.

During the course of the investigation, police received a tip suggesting that the noose may have been placed by someone in the midst of a mental health crisis, possibly intending to take their own life. The individual was said to have sought treatment at a local hospital, but officers were unable to verify this information.

With all investigative avenues exhausted, the case is now on hold unless new evidence emerges. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to contact the Geneva Police Department or Detective Steve Vine. Calls can be made anonymously to 315.828.6771 or 315.828.6784.
