Matthew Herbert has been appointed to the Geneva City School District Board of Education, replacing Randy Grenier, who recently resigned. Herbert, a district resident for the past decade, brings extensive experience in project management, particularly in K–12 school construction, to his new role.
A graduate of the Cortland City School District, Herbert has worked for LeChase Construction for nine years as a project manager. He holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. His daughter is currently enrolled in the district’s UPK program.
In his application, Herbert emphasized the importance of forward-thinking leadership. “I firmly believe that the obligation of the school board is to plan and work to improve the school district for the long-term good of the community,” he wrote. “As a board member, I would help further this obligation to the best of my ability.”
Board President Kelley Monson praised Herbert’s qualifications, saying, “Matt brings a wealth of experience to our board, including a strong background in project management, an understanding of school finance, and an enthusiastic commitment to serving the school community. We are excited to have had 13 exceptional candidates… Matt’s combination of skills, experience, and passion made him an outstanding choice.”
Herbert’s appointment will last until the end of June 2025. He may choose to run for one of two vacant seats in May 2025, including the remainder of Grenier’s term and a seat currently held by Brian Finnerty.
