What are the symptoms of bird flu?

Since 2022, over 126,800 birds in New York have been infected with avian flu, prompting health officials to heighten precautions despite no human cases reported in the state. Nationally, 67 confirmed human cases, including one death, have occurred since 2024.

Federal officials warn that early signs of bird flu in humans often include eye redness and irritation. Other symptoms may include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, and headaches. Less common symptoms are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

With increasing infections detected in wild and commercial flocks, including cases in the Hudson Valley and Long Island, officials stress vigilance to catch any human infections early.
