How does bird flu spread? Answering questions as more cases are confirmed in NY

  • / Updated:
  • Staff Report

Thousands of bird flu cases have been detected in New York flocks, including at Kashong Point, where 50 dead snow geese tested positive. Officials warn the public to avoid contact with bird waste and to report sick or dead birds, though the risk of human infection remains low.

The USDA reassures that bird flu cannot be spread through properly handled and cooked eggs. Eggs should be refrigerated at 40°F and cooked to 165°F to kill germs. Cracked or dirty eggs should be avoided.

Similarly, the CDC confirms that properly cooked poultry and beef are safe to eat. Cooking poultry to 165°F and beef to recommended temperatures effectively destroys bacteria and viruses, including avian influenza.
