A record-high 76% of Australians are dissatisfied with access to good, affordable housing, according to 2024 data. Causes include underinvestment in public housing, high immigration, and construction delays. The house price-to-income ratio has nearly doubled since 2002, and rents have more than doubled, making housing unaffordable for many, particularly young and low-income Australians.
Australia ranks second only to Türkiye in global housing dissatisfaction among OECD countries. While other services like healthcare and public transportation receive high approval, housing satisfaction has plummeted to just 22%. Young adults are especially impacted, with only 16% expressing satisfaction.
The government has pledged $25 billion in housing investments over the next decade to increase supply, aiming to stabilize prices and improve affordability.
